Carlos

Senior Guide

Where are you from?

I grew up in paradise, in the Pura Vida land, a very small town called Santa Clara, near the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica.

How long have you been guiding? Where have you guided?

I started guiding in 2007 in Costa Rica. Fun fact – Roque was my rafting sensei! I’ve guided on 5 different rivers in Costa Rica, and 3 different rivers in Canada. I’ve also gone on trips on many different rivers in western Canada, the US, and Costa Rica.

What do you love about guiding?

The adrenaline rush is what I enjoy the most; it’s pretty contagious, in a good way! Also, nothing beats working outside with fresh air, cool water, nice landscapes and beautiful people.

What’s your favourite rapid on the Kicking Horse River?

Big Fatties. It’s the picture spot, right underneath the Park bridge. It has so much stuff going on that you have to nail. You need to have a good line on the rapid before, change your angle, tell your guests about the photos, and then make sure your hair looks great while you are taking a big hit from those waves!

What’s on your bucket list that you have left to cross off?

Some places to visit, like Nepal, Alaska and Iceland. I like the fresh-cold weather which is pretty unusual for a Costa Rican! And, a big road trip from Canada down to Central America, with lots of camping, surfing, good food, rivers and days without taking showers!

Big Fatties – when it’s ‘on’ the photos from this rapid are so good. Hilarious!

Where are you from?
I’m originally from Qualicum Beach, a little town on Vancouver Island. For the last 6 years I’ve been spending my Winter months living in Nelson, BC skiing as much Kootenay Coldsmoke as I can, and my summer months living in a van by the river!

How long have you been guiding? Where have you guided?
I started pushing rafts in 2016 and the stoke’s been growing from that point on. Since then, I’ve rafted all across BC, including guiding multi-day trips up near Smithers, BC.

What do you love about guiding?
Guiding has brought me so much joy, so many incredible learning opportunities, and introduced me to the best people I’ve ever met! It’s hard for me to pin down one thing I love the MOST about it…. but if I had to choose it would be having a captive audience to tell my jokes to (sorry in advance for my cheesy humour).

What’s your favourite rapid on the Kicking Horse River?
I’ve yet to see the mighty Kicking Horse in person so picking a favourite rapid is a bit tricky… but I hear Shotgun/Portage is a real gooder and I love a challenge so I’m looking forward to getting on the sticks for that one.

What’s on your bucket list that you have left to cross off?
My bucket list is long and always changing, but there’s one thing that’s been on there for as long as I can remember: getting BARRELLED!!! Surfing has taken a backseat for me lately but I’m still chasing that dream every time I get out.

Guiding is the best office job you will every have! My desk is a raft full of enthusiastic people sharing their life adventure with me. My office, a river and mountains surrounding me are a constant reminder of Canadian beauty. It’s not only beautiful, but exciting, the day passes to fast when you are having fun.
